A full hybrid (HEV) charges its small battery solely through braking and coasting and only drives short distances electrically. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) has a larger battery that you can charge from a socket – it manages 40–80 km purely electrically and only uses fuel on longer journeys.

It's recommended – otherwise you'll barely use the electric advantage. With a wallbox at home or at work, you charge the hybrid overnight or during work and drive electrically every day. Without a charging option, a full hybrid is the more economical choice.
Many cantons grant reductions on the vehicle tax for hybrids, particularly plug-in hybrids. In a car subscription, simpcar pays this tax – the advantage is factored into the monthly rate.
Full hybrids typically consume 4.5–6 l/100 km, significantly less than pure petrol cars in the city. Plug-in hybrids can reach 1.5–3 l/100 km with regular charging, and more like 7–8 l/100 km without charging.
